    Background: The ferry boat,
Uskudar, suck by a water-spout storm on the 1st.March in the Day of Izmit, with
600 passengers on board, was raised today after nine days preparatory work.

The salvage craft used five main tackles and one auxiliary, and a crane.

Gradually the sunken vessel was pulled from the mud on the sea-bed; after six
hours the funnel was out of the water; two or three hours later the boat was
raised to the surface. It was estimated that there were about 180 tons of water
in the craft and in the region of 33 tons of mud.

The bodies of two small children and two members of the Uskudar's crew were
found on board, bringing the death-roll to about 500. The tragedy was caused by
a freak storm that not only sank the ferry boat in a matter of minutes, but also
prevented rescue craft from reaching the stricken vessel.

During the salvage operations, today, small boats carrying pressmen and
sightseers were kept from the immediate vicinity in case they disturbed the calm
waters or obstructed the salvage ships.
