  • Description

Nine of the twenty passengers of an Ethiopian DC 3 hijacked to Libya last Friday returned to Addis Ababa on Monday (25 January).

The passengers told reporters that the hijack had been carried out by four young men armed with pistols, a knife and what looked like a hand grenade. The aircraft was diverted to Libya, where the hijackers are understood to have asked for political asylum.

The hijackers did not identify themselves with any organisation, said a Swedish passenger, but one of then had told him: "We are doing this because Eritrea has to be liberated." (Eritrea is Ethiopia's northernmost province along the Read Sea where a state of emergency was declared in some areas last December).

A large crowd of relatives, friends and well-wishers assembled at the airport to welcome the passengers, who all agreed that they had been well treated while in Libya. The other seven passengers, including five Americans, a Frenchman and a Briton, disembarked in Cairo or Asmara in Northern Ethiopia.
