Background: In Spain, an Army General has been shot dead by urban guerrillas in the first politically motivated killing since the country's recent general elections. General agustin Munoz Vazquez was killed outside his home in Madrid on Monday (5 March) as he was about to get out of his official car.

SYNOPSIS: Among those to pay their last respect to General Vazquez were King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia. The Royal couple arrived by helicopter at a military hospital, where a mass had earlier been said. Hundreds of army officers also attended the ceremony.

Although Basque separatists have claimed responsibility for the deaths of six other senior military officers in Spain over the past year, suspicion has fallen on another left wing group. Police believe those responsible may belong to Grapo -- an acronym for October First Anti-Fascist Resistance Groups.

Grapo is responsible for a series of killings, bombings and kidnappings. It holds similar political ideals to the ETA group of Basque guerrillas, but Grapo is said to be even more violent in its approach. The death of general Vazquez ended a ten-day lull in urban guerrilla activity which coincided with Spain's general elections. The victorious centre Democrat Party of Prime Minister, Adolfo Suarez, is expected to continue with its hard-line approach against guerrilla activity.
