Background: U.S. Treasury Secretary William Simon arrived in Syria on Wednesday (3 March) as he continued his tour of the Middle East and Europe.
In an airport statement, he declared that although he would be in Syria for only a short time, he looked forward to full and productive discussions with the country's leaders.
He said his visit to Syria and other countries in the area was a re-affirmation of the United States' dedication to seeking a lasting peace in the Middle East and to assisting the countries of the region in their economic efforts.
The American Treasury Secretary stated that in his talks with Syrian leaders he would affirm American desire and willingness to work as closely as possible with Syria to strengthen the economic ties between the two countries and to help Syria meet its development goals.
