  • Description

One of the main opposition parties in West Germany, the Christian Social Union, held a big election rally in Munich on Saturday (4 September). It was part of their campaign for the federal election to be held on 3rd October.

SYNOPSIS: A large crowd of CSU supporters were at the Olympic Hall to hear the party leader, Mr. Franz Josef Strauss. The CSU is a sister party to the Christian Democrat Party, the largest opposition party in West Germany. Mr. Strauss is designated to be Vice-Chancellor and Finance Minister if the Christian Democrats and CSU win the forthcoming elections.

The latest opinion polls have shown the ruling coalition of the Social Democrats (SPD) and the Free Democrats (FDP) to have a slight lead over the Christian Democrats and CSU. Mr. Strauss was Finance Minister in a coalition government before the SPD-FDP coalition came to power in 1969. He's the longest serving leader of any of the major parties, having led the CSU since 1961.
