    Mr. Dean Acheson, United States Secretary of State under President Truman, architect of NATO and of post-war U.S. policies for containing the Soviet Union, died on Tuesday night at his home outside Washington, apparently of a heart attack.

    This film from Visnews' library shows him during a visit to West Germany in 1962 as a representative of President Kennedy at the height of the Cuban missile crisis, and speaking in Washington in 1966 at the time of France's withdrawal from NATO.

    His thoughts then on the threat to NATO were outlined in a speech to a Senate hearing in Washington:
