Background: Israelis celebrated the anniversary of the recapture of their holy places and reunification of Jerusalem during the 1967 war on Thursday (8 May). According to the Hebrew calendar, Thursday was the eighth anniversary.
At the square in front of the Wailing Wall, thousands of people joined President Katzir and other leaders at a prayer meeting, conducted by Chief Rabbi Ovadia.
Some of the crowd chose the occasion for a protest against any future attempt to return Temple Mount, in the old city, to Jordan.
The anniversary didn't pass off without incident. During the day, twenty people were arrested following clashes between Jewish and Arab youth outside a mosque near the Temple Mount area of East Jerusalem. Several people were injured.
