  • Description

Nobel Peace Prize winner Mother Teresa of Calcutta arrived in Italy on Wednesday (12 December) to seek assistance from the Pope for her work among the poor.

SYNOPSIS: Mother Teresa flew into Rome's Fumicino Airport from Norway, where she had attended the Nobel awards ceremony. The sixty-nine year-old Roman Catholic nun, famed for her work among the poor of Calcutta, wants to donate her prize money to charitable institutions in India.

However the Indian Government has said it may have to tax the 192,000 dollar prize. Mother Teresa told reporters in Rome she had heard she had been exempted from taxes, but official sources in India said the mother was still undecided.

However, the modest nun was successful in her audience with Pope John Paul. He agreed to give her a Vatican property in Rome, where she can care for unwanted children. Mother Teresa had urged the Vatican for nearly a year to give her one of its many empty properties in Rome. After receiving no response from Church officials, she decided to put her request personally to the Pope. Mother Teresa dislikes the glare of publicity, but it seems wherever she travels there are admires who have heard of her good works.
