    Background: The 1966 Summer Physics Colloquium of the Peking Symposium opened in Peking on July 23rd.

    More than one hundred scientists from over thirty countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America and Oceania are participating in this international scientific conference of important significance in the history of scientific development of the four continents.

    The opening ceremony was attended by Nieh Jung-chen, Vice-Premier of the State Council Kuo Mo-jo, Vice-Chairman of the Chinese National People's Congress Standing Committee and President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; Lin Feng, Vice-Chairman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee; and Li Szu Kuang, Vice-Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and President of the Scientific and Technical Association of China.

    Chou Pei-yuan, leader of the Chinese scientists delegation delivered the speech of welcome.

    Vice-Premier Nieh Jung-chen delivers a speech of greetings on behalf of the Chinese government and people. He expresses the hope that the Colloquium will make new contributions to the common cause of the scientists and peoples of the four continents, that is, their unity against imperialism, and the development of national science and culture.

    Vice-Premier Nieh Jung-chen says: 'The 1964 Peking Symposium showed that the people and scientists of our four continents had awakened and were determined to smash the control and monopoly of science by imperialism, colonialism and neo-colonialism in order to take science in their own hands; it showed that we would resolutely adhere to the principle of self-reliance and strengthen our unity and cooperation so as to propel our science and culture to a new age of rejuvenation and prosperity, and that we were determined to develop our science and culture in our countries in order to serve the cause of winning and safeguarding national independence, defending world peace and promoting the progress of mankind. The current Colloquium is meant to continue the realization of this lofty spirit and to take up this historic mission.

    Other speakers were scientist form Vietnam, Uruguay, UAR, Uganda, Tunisia, Togo, Syria, Sudan, Sierra Leone, Pakistan, Morocco, Mexico, Japan, Iraq, Indonesia, Guinea, Ecuador, Congo (B), Columbia, Chile, Ceylon, Cambodia, Burma, Australia, Argentina, Algeria, the East African Academy and Afghanistan. They all warmly greeted the successful convening of the Colloquium and wished the Colloquium a great success.
