INTRODUCTION The roads of Rome were more jammed than usual on Sunday (2 January) when thousands of people competed for space with cars in the Italian capital's annual marathon race.

SYNOPSIS: The race was open to anyone who cared to enter. So the bulk of the 4,000 contestants who set out from the Roman Coliseum were amateurs.

Young children matched their stamina with their parents in the race past the main archaeological sites in Rome. No-one was excluded -- including babies and the family pets.

The distance was the standard marathon -- 26 miles 385 yards (42.195 kms). The short of breath contestants were allowed to stop at the half-way mark. The race also attracted handicapped contestants -- but the wheelchairs proved to be an advantage against the heavy traffic.

Goodwill was the keynote of the whole affair. There were no first or last prizes, as such. Everyone who entered was simply given a poster.
