  • Description

THE RHODESIA BREAKAWAY GOVERNMENT HAS TIGHTENED PETROL RATIONING EVEN FURTHER. FROM TUESDAY, JANUARY 25, THE EXISTING RATIONS -- AS LOW AS A GALLON A WEEK FOR SMALL CARS -- WILL BE REDUCED BY 25 PER CENT AND PETROL WILL COST ONE PENNY MORE A GALLON.

PETROL RATIONING WAS INTRODUCING ON DECEMBER 28. IT ALLOWED DRIVERS OF MEDIUM-SIZED CARS A GALLON AND A HALF A WEEK AND TWO GALLONS FOR LARGER CARS. THE NEW SQUEEZE CUTS BACK THESE AMOUNTS BY 25 PER CENT.

AT FIRST BULK BUYERS WERE RATIONED TO 50 PER CENT OF THEIR AVERAGE PURCHASES BEFORE RATIONING. FROM JANUARY 25, THEY WILL BE ALLOWED ONLY 40 PER CENT OF THEIR PURCHASES OVER THE LAST TWELVE WEEKS.

SO FAR FARMERS HAVE BEEN ABLE TO DRAW THEIR NORMAL AMOUNTS OF DIESEL OIL. BUT THE NEW RESTRICTIONS WILL HALVE THIS AMOUNT.

THE ANNOUNCEMENT CAME ONLY THREE DAYS AFTER THE RHODESIAN REGIME LEADER, MR. IAN SMITH, SAID IN A TELEVISION INTERVIEW THAT HE DID NOT THINK MORE RATIONING WOULD BE NECESSARY.
