Background: Leaders of the Janata Party, which governed India for more than two years are once again challenging the rule of current Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi. After Mrs. Gandhi was ousted in 1977, Janata ruled the country until 1979, when mrs. Gandhi's Congress Party was returned to power. The opposition Janata Party held a political rally in the village of Bhiwani, about 322 kilometres (200 miles) from the Indian capital of Delhi, on Friday (8 January). Several thousand villagers attended the rally, which was addressed by Mr. Charon Singh, a former Prime Minister; Mr. Chandra Shekhar, the president of the Janata Party and Mr. Vajpayee, a former Foreign Minister and president of the Rhartiya Janata Party. Mr. Singh was presented with a bag of money, collected to finance the opposition's election campaign.
