    A HUGE EXPLOSION CRIPPLED THE UNITED STATES AIRCRAFT FERRY, U.S.N.S CARD, WHILE SHE WAS BERTHED AT A PIER ON THE SAIGON RIVER ON SATURDAY. NONE OF THE SEVENTY CIVILIAN CREWMEN ON BOARD THE VESSEL WAS INJURED.

    THE EXPLOSION BLEW A HOLE TWENTY-EIGHT FEE LONG (8 METRES) AND FOUR FEET (1 METRE) HIGH IN THE FIFTEEN-THOUSAND TON CONVERTED AIRCRAFT- CARRIER. THE SHIP SANK UNTIL IT WAS RESTING ON THE BOTTOM OF THE RIVER - BUT ITS DECKS WERE THEN STILL CLEAR OF WATER. SEVERAL IMPORTANT COMPARTMENTS ON THE THIRD DECK, INCLUDING THE ENGINE ROOM ND SOME OF THE CREW'S QUARTERS WERE FLOODED.

    AMERICAN OFFICIALS BELIEVE THE EXPLOSION WAS THE WORK OF THE VIET CONG. IT CAME ONLY A FEW HOURS AFTER THE END OF MAY DAY, AN IMPORTANT VIET CONG HOLIDAY AND ONE THAT HAS IN THE PAST BEEN USED BY THEN FOR SPECTACULAR SABOTAGE FEATS.
