A ceremony in New York City Sunday (15 September) celebrating Mexico's Independence Day.

At 11 P.M.former Mexican President Miguel Aleman struck a copy of the church bell in the village of Dolores which tolled the end of Spanish rule in Mexico on 15 September 1810.A crowd of 15 hundred shouted."Mexicanos! Viva Mexico! Viva la Independencia!"
Mariachi street bands, a troop of Mexicans in cowboy garb, and groups of dancers put on a fiesta in the street while ex-President Aleman, Mayor Wagner and other dignitaries watched from the steps of Federal Hall where...as Mayor Wagner pointed out...George Washington was sworn in as the first president of the United States.

The ceremony opened the observance of Mexico Week in New York aimed at promoting tourism.
