CLUB-SWINGING POLICE REINFORCEMENTS WADED IN TO RESCUE THEM. OFFICIAL SOURCES SAID AT LEAST 23 PEOPLE, INCLUDING SEVEN POLICEMEN, WERE INJURED UNOFFICIAL SOURCES PUT THE CASUALTY FIGURE AT 160.

    IT WAS THE SECOND DAY OF DEMONSTRATIONS BY NEGROES IN NASHVILLE. THIS TIME, THEY WERE PROTESTING THAT TWO SNACK BARS WERE PRACTISING RACIAL SEGREGATION.

    AFTER THE SHOUTING AND SCUFFLING WERE OVER, A POLICE SPOKESMAN SAID: "THIS WAS NO DEMONSTRATION. IT WAS A RIOT."
    ON MONDAY, POLICE CLASHED WITH DEMONSTRATORS OUTSIDE A RESTAURANT WHICH, THE DEMONSTRATORS COMPLAINED, WAS SEGREGATED.
