  • Description

MAJOR RELIEF WORK TO RUSH FOOD AND ESSENTIAL SUPPLIES THROUGH TO STARVING THOUSANDS IN NIGERIA'S FORMER BIAFRAN-HELD TERRITORIES IS WELL UNDER WAY TODAY (TUESDAY) WITH HUNDREDS OF TONS OF FOOD BEING DESPATCHED TO THE WORST AFFECTED AREAS. IN FRANKFURT, WEST GERMANY, FOG WHICH CAUSED THE CANCELLATION OF A CHARTERED AIRCRAFT FLIGHT YESTERDAY (MONDAY) FAILED TO STOP SUPPLIES BEING SENT ON THEIR WAY.

IT WAS PLANNED TO SEND AN AIRCRAFT WITH SOME SUPPLIES ABOARD TO FRANKFURT, WHERE IT WAS TO PICK UP THE REST OF ITS CARGO OF MEDICINES AND EQUIPMENT.

THE FRANKFURT SUPPLIES HAD BEEN WAITING FOR MORE THAN A MONTH FOR SUITABLE TRANSPORT TO BIAFRA.

HOWEVER, HEAVY FOG PREVENTED THE AIRCRAFT FROM LANDING AND IT RETURNED TO STUTTGART.

THE CARGO OF RELIEF SUPPLIES WAS THEN LOADED ONTO LORRIES AND TAKEN BY ROAD TO STUTTGART TO MEET THE AIRCRAFT.

OFFICIALS OF CARITAS INTERNATIONAL, THE ROMAN CATHOLIC RELIEF ORGANISATION ARRANGING THE SHIPMENT, EXPECTED THE AIRCRAFT TO LEAVE FOR NIGERIA LATER TODAY.

IT IS ESTIMATED THAT THERE ARE NOW 13,000 TONS OF URGENTLY-NEEDED SUPPLIES AT CENTRES IN NIGERIA, WITH UP TO 30,000 TONS AWAITING SHIPMENT IN NEIGHBOURING COUNTRIES, AS SOON AS FEDERAL APPROVAL IS GIVEN FOR RELIEF FLIGHTS TO BEGIN.
