  • Description

Two leading spokesman for FNLA, the National Front for the Liberation of Angola, have claimed that the Soviet Union is the only major power influencing the civil war in Angola.

Political Bureau member Jose Monteiro Barreto said in Rome on Monday (1 December) that there were some 400 Soviet military advisers, MIG fighter pilots and technicians now helping the rival MPLA (Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola). In addition he said there were 3,000 Cuban troops and some 4,000 former Katanga volunteers who previously helped the Portuguese colonial authorities against liberation movements.

Mr. Barreto was in Rome with his colleague Paulo Daniel Moyo for a world conference of Christian Democrat parties.

They claimed the FNLA now controls some 80 per cent of Angola but said the war looked like continuing because of the sophisticated weapons supplied by the Soviet Union to the MPLA.

Talking about foreign interference in the war, Mr. Barreto denied charges that the FNLA had anything to do with South African troops involved in the civil war. He said the South Africans had been brought in by UNITA (the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola) which has set up a joint rival government with the FNLA to the Luanda-based MPLA.

The two men said they both believed the best way the war could end would be for the three movements to unite. They said a military victory by FNLA would be very difficult and too great a sacrifice.

This film includes an interview with FNLA spokesman Jose Monteiro Barreto by VISNEWS reporter Ivor Gabor. A transcript appears below.
