  • Description

British Honorary Consul in Rosario, Stanley Sylvester, was released yesterday (Sunday) after seven days in the hands of kidnappers. Mr. Sylvester's captors, who described themselves as members of the self-styled Peoples' Revolutionary Army had demanded an unusual ransom for him.

Part of the ransom called for the distribution of 250,000 pesos (GBP26,000 Sterling) worth of food and blankets to slum dwellers and employees of the meat packing company which Mr. Sylvester managed.

Rosario is Argentina's second city and the meat company is the largely United States owned Swift plant.

Mr. Sylvester, 58, arrived home in a taxi just a week after he had been snatched by three men and a woman from outside his house in the plush Rosario suburb of Fisherton.

The taxi driver who drove him home, Santiago Mugueta, said he picked the Consul up about five miles (eight kilometres) from his home. Mr. Sylvester refused to talk to reporters, apart from saying he had been well treated and was in good health.
