  • Description

The Leipzig Spring Fair opened its doors on Sunday (12 March) for thousands of tourists and businessmen. Among those touring the grounds on Sunday were East Germany's Communist Party leader Erich Honecker and Prime Minister Willi Stoph. In all, over nine thousand exhibitors from 60 contrives are displaying goods at the fair, with East Germany being the largest of the exhibitors.

Restructuring has transferred some industrial sectors to Leipzig's Autumn Fair, so the Spring event concentrates on machine tools, heavy machinery, farm machinery and electronics and data equipment.

Twenty-six capitalist countries are exhibiting at the ten-day Spring Fair, including Japan who for the first time has a national collective exhibition. West Germany is the largest exhibitor after the East Germans.

The Soviet Union is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its participation at the Leipzig Fair and is showing examples of achievements in space to mark the occasion.

The motto of this year is "socialist economic integration in action" -- but this seems to have done little to alter the fair's role as an occasion for east-west trade exchanges.

SYNOPSIS: East Germany's Leipzig Trade Fair opened its doors Sunday with some nine thousand exhibits from 60 countries on show. Among the visitors were Prime Minister Willi Stoph and Party leader Erich Honecker.

The Soviet Union is marking its 50th anniversary of its participation in the Leipzig Fair with space achievements on display.

The Spring Fair concentrates on machine tools, heavy machinery, farm equipment and electronics equipment since restructuring moved some industrial sectors to the Autumn event. The Spring Fair is traditionally on occasion for east-west trade exchanges.

This is Japan's first national collective exhibition.

West germany is the largest exhibitor after east germany, and France and Austria are other traditional Western exhibitors.

Agricultural and heavy earth-moving equipment are on display for the ten day Spring Fair. Every second exhibitor is a foreigner and there are 26 western countries taking part. This year's motto is "Socialist economic integration in action". Total participation is down but organisers say it's because of the Autumn Fair's new significance.
