Background: The body of millionaire Left-wing Publisher Giangiacomo Feltrinelli - killed mysteriously in a dynamite explosion two weeks ago - was held in Milan yesterday (Tuesday). In the first instance police had announced that the burial would take place in secret to avoid clashes between extreme groups from the Right and the Left. But eventually, some 5,000 Left-wing students and workers were permitted to file past the coffin and line the route to the cemetery - and, in spite of shouts of "Foltrinelli assassinated" and "You will be revenged", there wee none of the outbreaks of violence expected by the massive police guard.
The funeral itself was conducted without priest or religious observance - and among those literary and political figures who participated in the family and close-associates ceremony was the French Leftist leader Regis Debray who made a brief oration, describing the dead man as a "fearless comrade who, although born into wealth, had dedicated his life to the service of the people."
Right-wing groups maintain that Sr. Feltrinelli died when a bomb accidentally exploded as hke was trying to blow up an electricity pylon - but his leftist supporters and associates claim that he was killed in a neo-Fascist frame-up aimed at discrediting the Left.
