  • Description

Nine thousand feet high in the New Mexico mountain is Sacramento Peak Observatory, a device of the United States Air Force Research directed towards the centre of the solar system, the sun.

Staffed by the Air Force Cambridge Research Centre, Sacramento Peak conducts studies of the sun to find out how solar activity influence the earth, particularly in the field of communications.

Special photographic equipment makes it possible to study vast disturbances on the sun's surface. This is known as the prominence in the Corona or outer region of the sun. Extending thousands of miles from the sun's surface, the explosion recorded by Visnews film is moving at thousands of miles per hour.

It is hoped that through thorough study of solar activity, the Air Force will be able to predict disturbances which affect communications, navigation and the Sun's influence on the world's weather.
