  • Description

Niger's junior soccer team soundly beat a visiting Libyan side on Sunday (8 August).

SYNOPSIS: The match was staged in the capital, Niamey, and Niger's Minister for Sport and Culture, M. Garba Sidikou, was present to meet all the players. His country has been trying hard to improve its performance in soccer. National coaches are constantly scouring local clubs for talent and their record is improving. The new team recently beat Togo.

A large and enthusiastic crowd watched Libya kick off playing from left to right. But Libya was unable to match the superior and, at times, daring tactics of the Niger team. The scoring was opened by Niger in the 28th minute through Pele -- no relation of the famous Brazilian, and Altine added another goal for Niger four minutes before half time.

Niger kicked off in the second half and it wasn't long before they went 3-0 ahead. Moctar scored the goal and followed up with another in the 84th minute.

Libya scored its only goal in the 70th minute after confusion in the goal mouth. Mohamed Abdalah rammed the ball home, but it was only a consolation goal. Niger won 4-1.
