M. Hedi Nouira, Tunisian Prime Minister, arrived in Algiers on Friday (24 March) at the start of a nine-day official visit. He was greeted at the airport by the Algerian Foreign Minister, M. Abdeleziz Pouteflika.
M. Nouira was to meet Algerian President Houari Boumedienne during the course of the day, and it was at his invitation that the Prime Minister was making the visit.
At the airport, the Tunisian Prime Minister told reporters that his visit -- his first to Algeria -- was of great importance to him, and not just a simple trip.
While in Algiers, he'll be discussing a wide range of issues, including trade and commerce between Algeria and Tunisia. He will also be talking about matters relating to North Africa as a whole as well as the wider problems of the Middle East. It's reported that he'll be interested in Algerians' reaction to King Hussein's proposal for the creation of a United Arab Kingdom between the east and west banks of the Jordan River. It's said that Algeria has strongly opposed the Jordanian leader's idea and has instead voiced its support for the Palestinian commando organisations.
