Background: POLICE STORMED SINGAPORE'S NGEE ANN COLLEGE ON SATURDAY AND ARRESTED 137 SIT-IN STUDENTS. THE STUDENTS, ALL CHINESE, WERE PROTESTING AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT'S EDUCATION POLICY WHICH THEY SAY WILL MAKE THE COLLEGE VIRTUALLY GOVERNMENT CONTROLLED, AND WILL NOT ALLOW IT TO PROGRESS TO UNIVERSITY STATUS.

AGITATION AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT'S EDUCATION POLICY HAS LED TO A SERIES OF CLASHES POLICE AND STUDENTS IN THE PAST FEW WEEKS. SINCE THE DEMONSTRATIONS STARTED MORE THAN 300 STUDENTS HAVE BEEN ARRESTED, EXPELLED FROM UNIVERSITIES AND TECHNICAL COLLEGES, OR DEPORTED FROM SINGAPORE. ON FRIDAY THE SINGAPORE GOVERNMENT BANISHED 71 STUDENTS FROM MALAYSIA AND INDONESIA. THEY HAVE BEEN GIVEN 14 DAYS TO LEAVE THE COUNTRY.

SATURDAY'S POLICE SWOOP ON THE NGEE ANN COLLEGE BEGAN BEFORE DAWN, BUT THE STUDENTS WERE PREPARED AND THE FIRST POLICE TO ATTEMPT TO ENTER THE COLLEGE WERE GREETED WITH A HAIL OF MISSILES, INCLUDING CHAIRS AND BOTTLES. THE POLICE FIRED BACK WITH TEAR GAS GRENADES AND SOON GAINED ENTRY. THERE WERE NO REPORTS OF INJURIES DURING THE RIOTING.

WHEN POLICE ENTERED THEY PROMPTLY ARRESTED ALL THE STUDENTS INSIDE. THE STUDENTS HAD BROKEN SEVERAL WINDOW PANES AND DAMAGED DESKS AND CHAIRS IN MAKING A BARRICADE. CLASSROOMS AND CORRIDORS WERE PLASTERED WITH BANNERS, POSTERS, AND PAINTED SLOGANS ACCUSING THE GOVERNMENT OF DISCRIMINATION AGAINST THE CHINESE EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM.
