    Background: The fifth conference of the International Confederation of Arab Trade Unions began yesterday (Friday) in Cairo. It was opened by the Egyptian Vice-President, Dr. Mahmoud Fawzy, speaking on behalf of President Sadat.

    Dr. Fawzy spoke of the serious problems facing Arab trade unionists, and particularly of the need to show solidarity with the Palestinian Arab workers.

    Delegates from fifty international labour organisations, including thirteen Arab organisations, are attending the conference, which will go on until the middle of next week. The delegates will be visiting a number of factories in and around Cairo, as well as the popular tourist sights.
