  • Description

Rhodesia is now in its eighth year of independence...facing the prospect of renewed negotiations to settle its dispute with Britain before the year is out.

This prospect was indicated by the Rhodesian leader, Ian Smith in an address to the nation on the seventh anniversary of Rhodesia's unilateral declaration of Independence - known as U.D.I.

Mr. Smith said the year could shed some light on chances of a fresh attempt to negotiants a settlement of the long-deadlocked quarrel with Britain.

Mr. Smith and his wife were among many white Rhodesians who celebrated the independence anniversary at a special ball in Salisbury on November 11th.

Following tradition, he rang in the "New Year" on a special bell and in a speech paid tribute to Rhodesia's friends. He said they had stood by her and supported her through seven "momentous and historical years".
