In Bangkok, capital of Thailand, massage parlours are one of the city's prime tourist attractions. Now they are threatened with closure because of a big oil-saving programme planned by the Government. The thousands of parlours throughout the city use huge amounts of power to drive their steam baths.
SYNOPSIS: The massage parlours are a common sight in Bangkok and any closure would cause a large amount of unemployment. It would also bring disappointment to thousands of tourists who use their services.
Thailand is drastically short of oil and the Government has recently extended for another year, an emergency decree announcing ways to save oil and prevent further shortages. Under consideration, is a move to stop the sale of fuel on one day a week.
Thailand's industry minister, Chatichai Choonhavan, said the massage parlours would not be the only ones to be cut-back or closed. He said that the rest of Bangkok's throbbing night life might suffer the same fate.
The massage girls say they will fight the ban. But, Mr. Choonhavan has said that he personally, has long held the opinion that massage parlours, bowling alleys and nightclubs should be closed. He believes that type of entertainment is a luxury.
