Background: Malawi's President, Dr. Kamuzu Banda has visited Kenya for the first time since President Daniel Arap Moi was sworn into office last month (October), following the death of President Jomo Kenyatta. Dr. Banda paid his last respects to his friend and fellow campaigner for African independence at the tomb of Jomo Kenyatta.

SYNOPSIS: President Moi was waiting for Dr. Banda's arrival at Embakasi Airport in Nairobi. The party left for a state luncheon where Dr. Banda praised the peaceful transfer of power in Kenya, after President Kenyatta's death on August 22 (1978). He supported President Moi's leadership, and paid tribute to the foundations he has laid since taking office. Dr. Banda said there was a great need to maintain law and order. He said there was no point in talking about freedom if people could not be sure of waking up alive the next morning. Dr. Banda said that both Malawi and Kenya are examples of peace and calmness.

Dr. Banda also visited the mausoleum of President Jomo Kenyatta. He excused himself for not attending the funeral of the late president, saying he would have wept the entire time, unable to control himself over the loss. When Dr. Banda arrived at the tomb, he was greeted by the late president's window, Mama Ngina Kenyatta and her son. He laid a wreath on the tomb and paid his last respects. Dr. Banda became visibly upset by the passing of his friend.

During the three day state visit, President Moi and the members of his cabinet met with Dr. Banda. Earlier, President Moi expressed hopes that relations between their two countries would continue to flourish, and he expressed interest in visiting Malawi.
