A CONSERVATIVE ESTIMATE OF DAMAGE IS 100 MILLION DOLLARS (GBP35 MILLION). FIFTEEN OTHER TORNADOES SWEPT OVER OTHER PARTS OF KANSAS AND NEIGHBOURING OAKLAHOMA AND FURTHER NORTH TORNADOES STRUCK SEVEN SUBURBAN AREA OF CHICAGO KILLING A CHILD AND INJURING AT LEAST 23 PEOPLE.

    THE TORNADO THAT STRUCK TOPEKA SCYTHED A 15-MILE (24 KILOMETRE) WIDE PATH THROUGH THE CITY. EVERY BUILDING IN THE 160-ACRE GROUNDS OF WASHBURN UNIVERSITY WAS LEFT IN RUINS OF BADLY DAMAGED. THE MUNICIPAL AIRPORT WAS BATTERED, WITH SEVERAL LIGHT PLANES TOTALLY DESTROYED, AND A STREET OF HOUSES ALMOST COMPLETELY DISAPPEARED. ONLY CONCRETE SLABS WERE LEFT.

    PRESIDENT JOHNSON TELEPHONED HIS SORROW TO THE CITY AND OFFERED ANY HELP HIS OFFICE COULD PROVIDE. STATE AND FEDERAL OFFICIALS MOVED IMMEDIATELY TO ASSIST THE DEVASTATED CITY. THE ARMY SENT 1,000 TROOPS FROM FORT RILEY TO HELP WITH RESCUE OPERATION AND GUARD AGAINST LOOTERS.

    A TORNADO, 100 MILES (161 KILOMETRE) AN HOUR WINDS, AND TORRENTIAL RAIN STRUCK CHICAGO TOGETHER. THE VIOLENT STORMS KILLED A THREE-YEAR-OLD GIRL, INJURED AT LEAST 23 PEOPLE AND CAUSED EXTENSIVE PROPERTY DAMAGE. THE TORNADO DEMOLISHED A HANGAR, AND DAMAGED TWO OTHERS AT AN AIRPORT DESTROYING 25 LIGHT PLANES.

    THE STORMS STRUCK IN THE NIGHT AND MORNING COMMUTERS HAD TO COPE WITH FLOODED UNDERPASSES, TREES BLOCKING STREETS, AND POWER FAILURES.

    NEAR ARLINGTON PARK RACE TRACK A CARAVAN PARK WAS TURNED INTO A SHAMBLES AND 12 OCCUPANTS WERE INJURED. A JOCKEY AND HIS FAMILY WERE TOSSED 80 FEET (24 METRES) THROUGH THE AIR IN THEIR DISINTEGRATING CARAVAN HOME.

    THE WEATHERMEN HAVE ARMED THAT THE DANGER IS NOT OVER YET, PARTICULARLY AS HURRICANE ALMA, WHICH HAS ALREADY CLAIMED 45 LIVES, IS STILL LURKING OFF THE FLORIDA COAST.
