    There was heavy Syrian presence in the Lebanese city of Sidon on Saturday (13 November) following the execution of a 22-year-old Palestinian. The Palestinian had been found guilty of robbery and murder by a joint leftist Palestinian field court.

    SYNOPSIS: Syrian were also in force in the western suburbs of Beirut over the weekend. They set up roadblocks in the Christian held areas.

    Palestinian and leftists mingled freely with the Syrians and thee was no trouble in this zone. The Syrians dug in around Beirut and have called on the people to avoid main road over the next few days to clear the way for the peacekeeping force's advance into the capital.

    Right-wing Falangist radio reported that Syrian and rightist Lebanese offices met on Saturday and reached an agreement on deploying the peacekeeping force in Beirut's eastern districts. Syrian forces have been waiting to move totally into Beirut since they reached the capital's outskirts last Wednesday.

    In Sidon, mines on approach roads and sandbag barricades were ripped down before they Syrian advance. Syrian tanks took up strategic positions throughout the city, at the airport and along the main highways.

    By mutual agreement the executed Palestinian was left in Sidon's main square with a warning sign hung around his neck. The quick trial and execution of the man has led some observes to read the action as a move to ease tensions between Lebanese Moslems and Palestinians in Sidon. The man the Palestinian killed during the robbery was a Lebanese Moslem.
