  • Description

The two freed American RB47 flyers landed Jan 27 at Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland, 12 miles from the capital, after a seven month imprisonment in the U.S.S.R. Their wives were waiting for them together with President Kennedy. The President arrived by helicopter.

Captain John McKone was the first down the ramp of the U.S. Air Force Constellation plane which carried the flyers on the last leg of their trip from Goose Bay, Labrador. McKone saluted and shook the President's hand.

Captain Froeman Olmstead followed McKone grasping the President's hand too. The flyers then turned to their waiting wives and embraced them, while the President stood in the background.

Press interviews with the flyers, on instructions from the White House, were forbidden.

Earlier President Kennedy said the release of these two surviving members of the shot down RB47 removed a serious obstacle to the improvement of relations between the two countries.
