  • Description

AMERICAN ASTRONAUTS THOMAS STAFFORD AND EUGENE CERNAN, LAUNCHED INTO SPACE TODAY (FRIDAY) ABOARD THE TROUBLE-DOGGED GEMINI - 9, WERE ORBITING THE EARTH TONIGHT -- FACING A NEW PROBLEM. GEMINI - 9 WAS LAUNCHED FROM CAPE KENNEDY TODAY AFTER 18 DAYS OF FRUSTRATION CAUSED BY ELECTRICAL TROUBLES.

A TARGET SATELLITE, WITH WHICH GEMINI-9 WAS TO LINK UP IN ORBIT, WAS BLASTED INTO SPACE TWO DAYS AGO. HOWEVER, WHEN GEMINI-9 REACHED THE 11-FOOT (FOUR METRES) LONG BARREL-SHAPED TARGET THEY DISCOVERED THAT A DOCKING MANOEUVRE WAS NOT POSSIBLE. THE PROTECTIVE NOSE CONE OF THE TARGET HAD FAILED TO BLAST COMPLETELY CLEAR AS PLANNED, AND WAS GAPING OPEN.

"IT'S A WEIRD LOOKING MACHINE WE HAVE HERE," STAFFORD REPORTED. "IT LOOKS LIKE AN ANGRY ALLIGATOR." AS HE AND CERNAN FLEW ONLY A FEW YARDS FROM THE TARGET AFTER THE 185-MILES (288 KLMS) HIGH RENDEZVOUS, STAFFORD MADE ONE RADIO SIGNAL ATTEMPT TO FREE THE CONE. BUT THE SIGNAL ONLY CAUSED THE GAPING "JAWS" OF THE CONE TO MOVE SLIGHTLY.

THE FAILURE TO CLEAR THE TARGETS NOSE CONE MAKES IT IMPOSSIBLE FOR GEMINI-9 TO NOSE INTO THE DOCKING COLLAR OF THE TARGET DURING THE THREE-DAY FLIGHT, BUT IT WILL NOT AFFECT THE OTHER PLANS FOR THE MISSION. THESE INCLUDE ANOTHER RENDEZVOUS WITH THE TARGET AND A WALK IN SPACE BY CERNAN.
