    Background: SUDAN TODAY CELEBRATED THE FIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE 1964 REVOLUTION WHICH RESTORED CIVILIAN GOVERNMENT AFTER SIX YEARS OF RULE BY THE ARMY. TO MARK THE OCCASION 334 PRISONERS WERE RELEASED.

    MOST ARAB STATES SENT DELEGATIONS TO KHARTOUM TO TAKE PART IN THE CELEBRATIONS. AMONG THOSE ATTENDING WERE THE SYRIAN FOREIGN MINISTER, DR. MUSTAFA AL-SAYED, SOUTH YEMEN'S MINISTER OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT, MR. ALI NASSER HASSANI; DR. HASSAN SABRY EL-KHOLY, PERSONAL ENVOY OF PRESIDENT NASSER AND AN IRAQI DELEGATION.

    THE MAIN CELEBRATION TOOK PLACE IN THE PALACE SQUARE WHERE LABOUR AND OTHER ORGANISATIONS PASSED IN REVIEW BEFORE PRESIDENT NUMAIRI OF THE SUDAN. THE PRESIDENT WAS FLANKED ON HIS LEFT BY IRAQ'S MINISTER OF DEFENCE AND ON HIS RIGHT BY A YEMENI REPRESENTATIVE.

    LATER IN THE DAY THE PRESIDENT REVIEWED A PASSING OUT PARADE OF YOUNG OFFICERS FROM THE SUDAN MILITARY COLLEGE.
