  • Description

The president of the South West African Peoples' Organisation (SWAPO), Mr. Sam Nujoma, has been visiting the Peoples' Republic of the Congo.

He was welcomed at Brazzaville's airport by Congolese President Marien Ngouabi and immediately drove to Mr. Ngouabi's office to begin a series of discussions.

Mr. Nujoma's talks with President Ngouabi cantered on the situation in Namibia and Congo's aid to SWAPO.

Mr. Nujoma spoke to newsmen after his initial talks with President Ngouabi and told them: "Contrary to imperialist allegations, South Africa has considerably increased its military presence in Namibia (South West Africa)."
"Some 40,000 soldiers are operating now in Namibia and the increase their numbers is the result of the favourable situation now prevailing in Portuguese territories", he said.

SWAPO was formed just after World War II and has recently been increasing its fight with Pretoria-both militarily and politically-for the independence of Namibia. South Africa was granted a League of Nations' mandate to govern Namibia just after World War I.

The current issue in Namibia is that South Africa is trying to divide the region into "homeland-type" self-rule areas. This has been strongly resisted by SWAPO, which sees this as a means to fragment the country and give the best parts to the whites.
