    The flagship of the Nigerian Navy, the "N.N.S. Nigeria", was recommissioned at the Cammell Laird shipyards in Birkenhead (near Liverpool) today (Friday) after undergoing repairs and modernisation.

    The Dutch-built frigate - originally commissioned in 1965 - is an anti-aircraft and anti-submarine craft with a 2,000-ton full load displacement and a complement of 216 men.

    At today's ceremony, the frigate was accepted by Rear Admiral Nelson Bossman Soroh, before the Commissioning Service and blessing of the ship which was conducted by Naval Chaplain.

    The "N.N.S. Nigeria" heads a fleet strength of 6 seaward defence boats, 3 fast patrol boats, 1 landing craft and 2 survey crafts - and a personnel of 200 officers and 2,000 ratings. These are official 1971 figures.

    The frigate carries two 102-mm twin mounting guns, five 40-mm single mounting AA guns, and one anti-submarine triple-barrel DCM.
