  • Description

Mexican cyclists did will at the 20th International Bicycle Race for Young People which took them over 1,000 miles (1770 kms) of their own country. Ten national teams took part in the 13-day race which ended on Sunday (18 November).

The route is regarded as particularly difficult. The cyclists must travel through mountains 9,000 feet (2,730 metres) above sea level, and in rapid succession through hot and cold temperatures. At one point the cyclists can free-wheel at speeds up to 45 miles an hour.

The prize for best time made by an individual went to the Mexican Rodolfo Vitela. And the Mexican team of four riders was the overall winner with a time of 134 hours 44 minutes. On the Mountain stretch, the Brazilian saul Alcantara scored the most points.

Of the 84 racers who set out from Taxoo City on the 6th November, only 63 finished the distance to ride into Mexico City and across the finishing line.
