  • Description

Australia's Margaret Court -- who retired from first class tennis after finding religion -- took the first step in her comeback by beating Britain's Sue Barker 6-2, 6-2 in the final of the Toyota Tennis Classic at the Koyoong court in Melbourne on Sunday (12 December). After the match, Mrs. Court said, "The Lord wants me back in tennis." She later combined with Holland's Betty Stove to win the doubles.

SYNOPSIS: The singles final was played in extremely windy conditions. The high winds, and Mrs. Court's powerful ground strokes and volleying, completely unsettled Miss. Barker.

The young British player was never really in the match. Mrs. Court kept sliding the ball away from her opponent, low on Miss. Barker's backhand. It proved a frequent winner.

The two players were on the court for only 50 minutes before it was all over.

Mrs. Court really made it her day when she combined with Holland's Betty Stove to take on South Africans Ilana Kloss and Linky Boshoff, in the doubles final.

The Court-Stove combination won in straight sets 6-2, 6-4.
