  • Description

French fashion king Pierre Cardin on Tuesday (22 July) gave a preview in Paris of some of the designs he has included in his 1975/76 Autumn-Winter collection.

This year's look is smooth and long, following the lines of the "tube" designs hinted at in the Spring and Summer collections. The roomy figure-hugging shapes ... but with an occasional touch of gathering to retain the swing of earlier designs.

Autumn colours dominate, with the subdued tones of parma violet, grey, copper green, brown and rust contrasting with the occasional flash of burgundy or bordeaux red.

Cardin's designs allow almost complete freedom of movement, despite their clinging shapes. Cunning draping and cutting give the slim line...and still plenty of room to manoeuvre.

This year, there is almost no hint of the fashion revolution sparked off in the 1960s by Ungaro's tradition-smashing mini-skirts. Below the knee is the length for all the major Paris fashion houses ... and Cardin is no exception. Elegance, not spectacle, is the motif of haute couture for 1965/76.
