Background: President Nikolai Podgorny, the Soviet Head of State, arrived in Ankara on Thuesday (11 April) to start a week-long official visit to Turkey. He is the first Soviet President to visit Turkey since the two countries became republics some 50 years ago.
He was accompanied by his daughter Natalya and a group of economics and trade officials. Talks between the two sides are expected to concentrate on expanding relations between the two countries, which have shown a slow but steady development in recent years.
One of his first acts on Turkish soil was the laying of a wreath at the Mausoleum built in memory of Kemal Ataturk, the architect of modern Turkey.
