Background: INTRODUCTION: As other nations' economic development is being affected by the world-wide recession, China is pressing on with industrial expansion. One of the Special Economic Zones which have been created is at Shenzen on the border with Hong Kong, and substantial investment from there is helping to relax the traditional political tension with the Chinese mainland.
SYNOPSIS: These luxury houses near the Beach of Shekou Sez, in Shenzen are typical of many of the buildings which foreign firms are now putting up in the town.Shenzen Special Economic Zone has accepted well over three hundred and fifty thousand dollars in foreign investment since it was founded in 1979.And 550 enterprises have gone into operation there. This level of foreign investment has occurred elsewhere in Guangzhou, Peking and Shanghai as well.
Hong Kong businessmen have found it particularly attractive to invest in Shenzen.Hong Kong has little available land suitable for urban development and prices are the highest in the world. But in Shenzen land prices are near the lowest in the world, and the Government has set aside a large area for economic projects.Labour costs are also low, so Hong Kong businessmen are keen to aid the new construction works in Shenzen.Expansion in the town includes agriculture, tourism, animal husbandry, as well as housing and industry.
Expansion means not only a new sewerage system for the town, but a new hospital as well.
Even death is part of economic growth in Shenzen.Workers have been clearing the hillsides to dig grave plots. The graves are being sold at over 2000 dollars a plot, and the first three thousand have already been sold, mainly to foreign Chinese.Anybody who wants to buy the plots has to wait six months.
Visa restrictions will be slackened as Shenzen moves towards a free trade zone, and increasing involvement with the economy of Hong Kong.
