  • Description

The Lebanese Prime Minister, Selim Al-Hoss resigned on Wednesday (16 May) to make way for a new government which, he said, could restore stability to the country. The resignation follows a two-day summit in Damascus where Lebanese President Elias Sarkis and his Syrian counterpart, Hafez El-Assad, agreed on a common approach to restore stability in the Lebanon. In South Lebanon, the rebel Lebanese army officer, Major Saad Haddad continues to control the wedge of territory along the Israeli border which he has declared 'Free Lebanon'. Major Haddad told newsmen on Monday (14 May) that he placed no importance on the Damascus summit and pledged to work towards the freedom of all Lebanon.
