  • Description

CREWS OF 159 CARS CONVERGED ON MONACO TODAY (MONDAY) AFTER A 60-HOUR, 200-MILE (3,500 KMS) DRIVE ON THE FIRST STAGE OF THE 39TH MONTE CARLO RALLY. THE ENTRANTS, WHO LEFT FROM EIGHT DIFFERENT CENTRES IN EUROPE, REPORTED CONDITIONS ON THE FIRST STAGE HAD BEEN GENERALLY GOOD. TWENTY-FIVE CARS ARE SO FAR OUT OF THE RALLY.

WITH THE FIRST STAGE OF THE EVENT OVER, WEST GERMAN PORSCHES ARE CONSIDERED TO HAVE A CHANCE OF PULLING OFF A HATTRICK OF WINS. THE PORSCHES, WHICH DO BEST IN DRY CONDITIONS, WON THE RALLY OUTRIGHT IN 1968 AND 1969.

SWEDISH DRIVER BJORN WALDEGAARD, WHO SET OUT FROM OSLO IN CAR NUMBER 6, A PORSCHE, IS HOPING TO ACHIEVE A DOUBLE. HE WON THE RALLY LAST YEAR. HIS CO-DRIVER THIS YEAR IS LARS HELMER.

THE RALLY BEGAN WITH 184 CARS LEAVING FROM ENGLAND, POLAND, WEST GERMANY, PORTUGAL, FRANCE, ATHENS AND MONTE CARLO.

AFTER A 24-HOUR REST PERIOD, THE CARS STILL IN THE RALLY WILL SET OUT ON A 790-MILE (1,200 KMS) CIRCULAR ROUTE WHICH WILL TAKE THEM THROUGH THE ALPS AND BACK TO MONACO.

THE STAGE IS EXPECTED TO BE THE FIRST REALLY TOUGH TEST FOR THE CREWS, WITH NARROW ROADS, HIGH SPEEDS AND CHANGEABLE WEATHER CONDITIONS THE BIGGEST HAZARDS.

THE TOP 60 SURVIVORS AFTER THIS GRUELLING TEST WILL LEAVE MONACO ON THURSDAY FOR A FURTHER RUN THROUGH THE ALPS. FINAL RESULTS OF THE RALLY ARE EXPECTED TO BE ANNOUNCED ON FRIDAY.

TWO OF THE RALLY DRIVERS, DUTCHMEN HENK BLOK AND HUUB VERMEULEN, ARE IN HOSPITAL WITH FACIAL INJURIES, RECEIVED WHEN THEIR FORD MUSTANG HIT A WALL AND A TELEGRAPH POLE.
