Background: Schiphol airport in Amsterdam is under tight security surveillance following the death on Tuesday (19 September) of an Israeli Embassy official in London, Dr. Ami Shachori - who died on opening a package bomb believed to have been mailed from Holland.

The bomb was one of at least 20 potentially lethal devices thought to have been despatched by Arab guerrillas in Amsterdam to Israelis in top diplomatic posts throughout the world.

Security men at the airport are also treating very seriously a threat received by the West German airline Lufthansa, contained in a letter postmarked Amsterdam, that a plane wold be blown up in mid-flight unless a sum of 2.4 million marks (300,000 pounds sterling) was forthcoming.

Meanwhile British police have flown to the Netherlands to help Dutch police with inquiries into the sending of the bomb which killed Dr. Schachori, who held a non-political position as an agricultural attache at the London Embassy.

SYNOPSIS: Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam - where, it's believed, Srab guerrillas despatched a package bomb which exploded and killed an Israeli official, Doctor Schachori, when he opened it at London Israeli's London Embassy on Tuesday. Since the incident, a tight security curtain has descended on the airport.

At least twenty similar, deadly explosive devices were sent off to other Israeli officials throughout the world...and Arab guerrillas are claiming responsibility. In each case the parcel bombs are though to have been sent from Amsterdam. Now the police are taking no chances... packages and passengers alike are searched thoroughly before flights take off.

It was also from Amsterdam that a letter was mailed to the West German airline Lufthansa, containing a threat to blow up an aircraft in mid-flight unless over two million marks was paid...to an undisclosed source.
