Background: In Turkey, the body of a police officer, killed in the latest round of violence involving extremists of the Right and Left, has been buried after being borne by his colleagues through the streets of Afyon, a town near Istanbul.

SYNOPSIS: The cortege was headed by the police band at the slow march.

The murdered policeman was Ibrahim Tinaz, who died in a gunbattle with leftwing jailbreaker. Another police officer was seriously injured as police fought with members of the Turkish Workers' and Peasants' Liberation Army -- TIKKO -- who'd engineered the jail break. The policeman was the latest to die in mounting violence involving both the Left and Right and which so far this year have claimed well over 50 lives.

Police colleagues made the journey from Istanbul to Afyon, the slain officer's home town, for the funeral. And hundreds of local people lined the streets to pay their own silent tributes.

Before the funeral, the coffin was carried to the local police headquarters, where crowds heard the police chief speak. Throughout Turkey, secret measures have been introduced to combat the growing political violence which has risen dramatically since the Social-Democrat Government of Mr Bulent Ecevit came to power a month ago.
