  • Description

Rag Trade brought off an exciting win in the daunting Grand National Steeplechase at Aintree, near Liverpool, on Saturday (3 April) after resisting a staff challenge from Red Rum.

Rag Trade, a 14-1 outsider, edged ahead after the last of the 30 fences, to win by two lengths and deny Red Rum what would have been a record third triumph.

It was one of the most dramatic finishes in recent years with Rag Trade, a 10 year old chestnut gelding, just managing to find extra reserves of strength in the run up to the line.

His victory gave his trainer, Fred Rimell, his fourth victory in the National -- rated the toughest and most spectacular steeplechase event in the world.

Red Rum finished second at 10-1 with Eyecatcher eight lengths away in third place and Barona, the 7-1 favorite, taking fourth place.

Rag Trade's victory in the four and a half mile (7 kilometre) event earned GBP37,430 (SUS75,000) for his owner, Mr. Pierre Raymond, who previously won in 1963 with Ayala.

The race, seen by an estimated television audience of 700 million in 100 countries, lived up to its reputation by providing plenty of thrills and spills. The obstacles took a high toll and only half the 32 starters completed the course.
