Background: Heavy fighting has been going on in El Salvador. Infantry supported by light artillery and armoured vehicles have been combing the provinces of Usulutan, San Vicente, Morazan and Chalatenango. Other troops have been keeping guard in many coastal regions. One of the worst centres of fighting was the town of San Sebastian, where insurgents killed the commander of an army barracks before retreating. Army sources said 16 guerrillas died in the fighting. On Monday (15 February) heavy fighting was still going on in the town. Government troops delivered constant fire at their opponents and were supported by an armoured car. But the guerrillas hit back, and a steady stream of wounded troops were evacuated by helicopter. More than 26,000 people have died in the undeclared civil war between government troops and leftist guerrillas in the past two years.
