  • Description

Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) leader Yasser Arafat has made an impassioned speech to mark the tenth anniversary of the POL's founding on 1 January 1965.

In a pre-recorded message to all Palestinians he called for "further sacrifices" in 1975 -- a year for "escalation and revolutionary cohesion", a year of "intensified struggle, through which we can penetrate towards new horizons with sure steps". He ended twenty minutes of traditional Arab rhetoric by saying: "The revolution will continue until victory is achieved".

In fact his speech as a whole added little to the one he gave to the United Nations' General Assembly in mid-November. He even re-iterated his now-famous "a gun in one hand, an olive branch in the other" phrase.

Mr. Arafat reviewed the past decade, calling it a time of hardship and suffering, as the Palestinian people battled with determination against "arrogant and oppressive regimes". It was a time, he said "characterised by both victories and setbacks ... But the revolution -- despite the mad efforts of its enemies (international imperialists, Zionists and invaders) ... has accomplished miracles".

The last part of his speech was a call to all Palestinians for unity. "Let all efforts unite, all rifles come together and all hands join to face this new year in the life of the our revolution to face it in confidence, assurance and steadfastness".
