  • Description

President Nasser and Libyan leader Colonel Muammar el Gaddafi met at the Kubbeh Republican Palace in Cairo on Wednesday (June 10) for urgent talks on the crisis in Jordan and the latest development in the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Colonel Gaddafi, chairman of Libya's Revolutionary Command Council, arrived from Beirut on an unscheduled visit following a tour of Arab capitals aimed at boosting the Eastern front against Israel. He was presumed to be consulting President Nasser on what efforts their two nations -- linked in a tripartite alliance with Sudan since last December -- could make to help resolve the situation in Jordan.

Observers said that the present fighting between guerrilla groups and government forces in Amman did not augur well for Colonel Gaddafi's missions. Egyptian newspapers are denouncing the internecine warfare as a throwback in the Arab struggle against Israel.

Egypt's War Minister, General Mohamed Fawzy, Foreign Minister Mahmoud Riad and Vice President Anwar Sadat also took part in the talks.
