    THE NATIONAL LIBRARY CONTAINED MORE THAN FOUR MILLION RARE MANUSCRIPTS AND BOOKS THE NIGHT THE RIVER ARNO DEVASTATED FLORENCE. NOW AT LEAST 80,000 OF THEM ARE IN NEED OF HIGHLY SPECIALISED TREATMENT..... ONE COLLECTION OF DRAWINGS BY AN EARLY 19TH CENTURY ENGLISH ARTIST IS TODAY COVERED WITH MOULD AND FUNGUS, STAINED BY MUD, OIL AND SEWAGE. A SKILLED BOOK-BINDER WILL HAVE TO WORK ON IT FULL-TIME FOR AN ENTIRE YEAR TO RESTORE IT.

    AND THAT IS ONLY AT THE NATIONAL LIBRARY. THE IMMENSE TREASURES OF FLORENCE ARE PRESERVED IN 20 MUSEUMS, 40 CHURCHES AND 50 PALACES. MANY OF THEM WERE BADLY DAMAGED BY FLOODWATERS, AND WITH THEM THE PAINTINGS AND SCULPTURES THEY HOUSE.

    THE EXPERTS WORKINGS ON RESTORING THE PAINTINGS AND SCULPTURES WENT TO FLORENCE FROM ALL OVER EUROPE AND NORTH AMERICA. THEIR WORK IS PAID FOR BY FUNDS SET UP AFTER THE DISASTER, AND BY THE ITALIAN GOVERNMENT.

    IT TOOK THEM MONTHS MERELY TO ASSES THE EXTENT OF THE DAMAGE. NOW THEY'RE ENGAGED IN THE DELICATE BUSINESS OF CLEANING AND RESTORING. IT IS WORK THAT WILL CONTINUE FOR AT LEAST ANOTHER 25 YEARS, AND COST MILLIONS OF POUNDS STERLING.
