  • Description

VINCENTE SALVIDAR, OF MEXICO, SUCCESSFULLY DEFENDED HIS WORLD FEATHERWEIGHT BOXING TITLE FOR THE FOURTH TIME WHEN HE NARROWLY OUTPOINTED MITSUNORI SEKI, OF JAPAN, OVER 15 ROUNDS AT THE EL TOREO BULL RING IN MEXICO CITY.

SALVIDAR RECOVERED QUICKLY FROM A FOURTH ROUND KNOCKDOWN AND GRADUALLY SHOWED HIS SUPERIORITY. BUT FOR MUCH OF THE FIGHT THE JAPANESE CHALLENGER GAVE AS GOOD AS HE RECEIVED. BOTH BOXERS FINISHED THE FIGHT WITH THEIR LEFT EYE SWOLLEN - THE ONLY MARKS TO SHOW AFTER 15 ROUNDS OF GOOD, HARD, CLEAN, FIGHTING.

THE MARGIN IN SALVIDAR'S FAVOUR WAS NARROW - 146 POINTS TO 142. IN HIS DRESSING ROOM AFTER THE FIGHT SEKI SAID HE THOUGHT THE DECISION WAS JUST. HE SAID: "SALVIDAR IS VERY TOUGH". THE JAPANESE BOXER ADDED THAT HE MIGHT ASK FOR A RETURN BOUT, BUT NO DECISION HAD BEEN MADE.

FOR MOST OF THE CONTEST THE FIGHT WAS WIDE OPEN AS THE TWO BOXERS CIRCLED EACH OTHER WARILY, SEEKING AN OPENING THAT SELDOM APPEARED. IT WAS MOSTLY THE CHAMPION, CHEERED ON BY 25,000 SUPPORTERS, WHO MADE THE RUNNING, DARTING IN WITH SHORT JABS. BUT HIS TALLER, SLIGHTER OPPONENT SEEMED IMPERVIOUS TO THE PUNISHMENT THAT RAINED ON HIS BODY AND SHOULDERS.

SEKI CAME OUT OF HIS CORNER FIGHTING IN THE FOURTH ROUND AND UNLEASHED A LEFT-RIGHT COMBINATION THAT SENT A SURPRISED SALVIDAR SPRAWLING ON HIS BACK. BUT THE CHAMPION WAS ON HIS FEET AGAIN INSTANTLY AND DID NOT TAKE A COUNT. SEEING HIS CHANGE SEKI BORED IN AND HAD THE CHAMPION GROGGY AND REELING FOR THE REST OF THE ROUND. BUT DESPITE HIS TWO-HANDED BARRAGE THE JAPANESE FIGHTER COULDN'T PUT SALVIDAR DOWN AGAIN, AND AFTER COASTING THROUGH THE NEXT TWO ROUNDS THE MEXICAN CHAMPION CAME BACK AS STRONGLY AS EVER.

SALVIDAR, DEFENDING HIS TITLE FOR THE FOURTH TIME, HAD WON 20 OF HIS PREVIOUS 28 FIGHTS BY KNOCKOUT. SEKI, WHO LOST A PREVIOUS ATTEMPT AT THE FEATHERWEIGHT TITLE TO SUGAR RAMOS IN 1964, HAD A RECORD OF 63 VICTORIES, NINE LOSSES AND ONE DRAW. FOR SUNDAY'S FIGHT SALVIDAR EARNED A PURSE OF GBP17,921 STERLING AND SEKI GBP3,584 STERLING.
